Käre bröder och systrar,
I en tv-intervju med den väl kände teve-evangelisten Billy Graham sade om Helige Fadern Johannes Paulus: ”Han levde som sin Mästare den Gode Herden, och han dog som sin Mästare den Gode Herden.”
I dagens evangelium, säger Jesus att han är den Gode Herden och vad han gör för sina får.
Idag är det Den Gode Herdens söndag. Idag, inbjuder kyrkan oss att reflektera kring betydelsen av kallelser, och att be för detta. Det påminner oss om att hela den kristna gemenskap har ansvaret för att främja kallelser.
När vi firar denna högtid låt oss då tänka på vårt dagliga liv. Låt oss vara goda herdar och goda ledare. Alla som är anförtrodde att ha omsorg om andra är en herde. Därför är präster, föräldrar, lärare, läkare, sjuksköterskor, regering etc. är herdar. Vi blir goda herdar genom att älska de som är oss anförtrodda, genom att be för dem, tillbringa vår tid, våra talenter och välsignelser för deras välfärd. Föräldrar måste vara goda förebilder för sina barn. Framförallt bör föräldrarna be för sina barn.
Låt oss också vara goda får i Jesu, den Gode Herdens fålla. Vår lokala kyrka är vår fålla, och våra präster är våra herdar. Låt oss därför följa våra herdars röst, ta emot den andliga föda som de ger oss i den Heliga Mässan. Låt oss också samarbeta med våra präster genom att ge dem goda förslag för församlingens bästa och aktivt delta i de aktiviteter som anordnas.
Låt oss be för bra präster och kallelser. Detta är ett behov för vår tid. Den troende gemenskapen måste ständigt be för kallelser både i kyrkan och i sina familjer. Eftersom bra präster och ordensfolk kommer från goda kristna familjer, låt oss be för alla familjer i vår församling. Föräldrar bör respektera och uppmuntra sina barn som visar intresse i att vilja bli präster eller bröder eller systrar. Föräldrar bör också uppmuntra sina barn att delta aktivt i barn- och ungdomsaktiviteterna i församlingen. På denna Världsdagen för bön om kallelser, låt oss alla be för flera kallelser och för goda präster. Låt det finnas heliga präster i Sverige. Amen

“Pope John Paul II, the good shepherd.” The most beautiful and meaningful comment on the life of our late Holy Father John Paul II was made by the famous televangelist Billy Graham. In a TV Interview he said: “He lived like his Master the Good Shepherd, and he died like his Master the Good Shepherd.” In today’s gospel, Jesus claims that he is the Good Shepherd and explains what he does for his sheep.
Today is Good Shepherd Sunday. Today, the Church invites us to reflect on the meaning of God's call and to pray for vocations. It reminds us that the entire Christian community has the responsibility for promoting vocations. Both the Old and New Testaments use the image of a shepherd to describe the unique relation of God to Israel and the Christ to Christians. The first reading is taken from St. Peter’s first sermon on Pentecost. He speaks to the Jewish people gathered for the harvest feast. Peter with courage proclaims that the one they had allowed to be crucified was the true shepherd, the Lord and Messiah. And he continues that the need of the time is to repent and to be baptized “in the name of Jesus Christ.” In his letter, Peter encourages the suffering Christians to follow in their shepherd’s footsteps. Peter also explains how Jesus, the innocent sufferer, is a model of patience. His suffering has enabled us to become more fully children of God. In today’s Gospel, two brief parables about sheep reveal Jesus as our unique means to salvation and as a selfless, caring “shepherd” who provides protection and everything we need in our lives.
When we celebrate this feast let us think about our day to day life. Let us be good shepherds and good leaders. Every one who is entrusted with the care of others is a shepherd. Hence priests, parents, teachers, doctors, nurses, government officials, etc. are all shepherds. We become good shepherds by loving those entrusted to us, praying for them, spending our time, talents and blessings for their welfare. Parents must give good example to their children. Above all, parents should pray for their children.
Let us be good sheep in the fold of Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Our local parish is our sheepfold, and our pastors are our shepherds. So let us hear and follow the voice of our shepherds, receive the spiritual food given by them through the Holy Mass, cooperate with our pastors by giving them positive suggestions for the welfare of the parish and actively participate in the activities of the parish.
Let us pray for good priests and vocations. This is the need of the time. The faith community must continuously pray for vocations both in the church and in their families. Since good priests and religious come from good Christian families, let us pray for all the families in our parish. Parents should respect and encourage their children who show an interest in becoming priests or a religious brothers or sisters. Parents should also encourage their children to participate actively in the children’s and youth activities in the parish. On this World Day of Prayer for Religious Vocations, let us all begin to pray for our priests and let there be holy priests in Sweden.
